You know that feeling you had the day before your birthday when you were a kid? Or the excitement you felt on Christmas Eve? Well, we have that feeling right now, because the 2018 ISAPS Congress is almost here!

In just a few short weeks, two years of preparation will finally result in the biggest aesthetics conference in the world! And even better, we’re holding it in one of the most beautiful cities in North America, Miami Beach. Believe us, this wasn’t a coincidence. Miami not only has a healthy local plastic surgery industry, it’s also the home of some of the most stunning beaches you could imagine. This combination, along with the opening of the newly renovated Miami Convention Center, makes it the perfect choice for the Congress.

Due to the Congress’ location in Florida, we’ve had many inquiries from ISAPS Plastic Surgeons who wish to take their families along for a post-Congress family vacation. Frankly, we think this is a fabulous idea! Florida is known for being a tourist magnet, thanks in part to it being the home of Walt Disney World and other theme parks. But these parks are only the beginning of the tourist scene in Florida. We have jaw-dropping wildlife parks, world-class shopping and dining, and did we mention the beautiful beaches? If you’re taking your family with you, here are a few things that you want to be sure that you don’t forget (or that you should pick up soon after you get here.)

Clothing

Florida can be very hot, even in October, so you’re going to need clothing that matches the temperature. If you’re just coming off a hot summer, don’t put away your t-shirts and shorts quite yet. And if you’re heading into a hot summer, well, get those t-shirts and shorts out of storage a little bit early!

Mind you, it will still be the end of October/beginning of November, so be sure to take along some light long-sleeve shirts, just in case the temperature gets a little cooler. There may also be the potential for rain during the Congress, so bring along some lightweight rain gear for the whole family.

Don’t forget to take your bathing suits! The waters of Miami Beach are perfect for a swim, not to mention the hotel pools and waterparks you might encounter over the course of your trip.

Finally, there will be a fantastic Halloween party for all Congress-goers, so plan to bring your costumes, or find one at any of the wonderful shops in Miami Beach, like ABC Costume Shop or La Casa De Los Trucos.

Sun Protection

As ISAPS Plastic Surgeons, we are the last people who need to be told about the dangers of sun exposure. So many people in Florida suffer from sun-related skin damage due to the constant, year-round sunshine. When you’re visiting, make sure that you either pack an excellent quality sunscreen or buy some when you arrive.

Don’t forget to pack some lip balm with SPF protection as well!

Passports

This is sort of a no-brainer if you’re flying in from another country, but a reminder never hurts. Nothing is worse than the feeling of arriving at the airport only to discover that you forgot your passports at home.

Similarly, make sure that you take some official identification with you, like your driver’s license.

Plug Adaptors

Electrical standards are different everywhere in the world, with a variety of different plug shapes and voltages. Nowadays, most electronics have built-in universal power supplies, but you may need plug adaptors to charge your devices. It might be wise to buy a few before you leave for Miami.

Money

Although digital methods of payment are very popular in the United States, it always pays to have some cash on hand.

Avoid waiting until you arrive to get some local currency, as the exchange rate at the Miami International Airport is usually much higher than you can find elsewhere. If you do a bit of research, you might be able to find a much better exchange rate in your home country. That way, you’ll already have your USD currency when you arrive.

Some Extra Space

When you pack your suitcases, be sure to leave some free space in there since, as a tourist, you might want to bring back some mementoes of your trip. Disney, especially, has thousands upon thousands of products that make ideal souvenirs, but you need to make sure that you have room for them before you leave. The last thing you want to discover is that you have to pay an overweight baggage fee at the airport on your way back home.

Random Things

Here are a few ideas of things you may want to keep in mind about your family trip to Florida:

Remember, it’s hot in Florida, so it’s important to stay hydrated. Bringing along some refillable water bottles can be a great idea, especially if you want to save the money you might spend buying expensive bottled water at any of Florida’s theme parks.

A very popular carry-on item, especially for international travelers, is a neck pillow. These can make a long, exhausting trip across the ocean just a little bit more comfortable.

Finally, be sure that you have all relevant receipts and documents organized and ready to take with you. Although digital versions of tickets and confirmation emails on your smartphone can be convenient, it never hurts to have printed versions with you, just in case.

We’re sure that you’re just as excited as we are for the 2018 ISPAS Congress! If you haven’t already booked your room at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, you should give them a call. It’s a little late, but they might be able to squeeze you in, or there could be a cancelation. But no matter where you are staying, we are sure that your stay in Miami Beach will be wonderful, and we bet that your family vacation afterward will be a trip to remember as well!
