Why You’ll Love the Brand New Miami Beach Convention Center!

At the previous ISPAS Congress in Tokyo two years ago (it’s been two years already?!), some of the best feedback we received was about the caliber of the convention facilities. They really set the bar for us, so when we were thinking about holding the 2018 Congress in South Beach, Miami, we had to ask ourselves what kind of conference facilities would be available.

We knew that it had to be state-of-the-art, and large enough to host the thousands of ISAPS Plastic Surgeons who would be attending. And boy, did we ever hit the lottery, because the Miami Beach Convention Center has been transformed over the course of a seven-year renovation, to become one of the most advanced and beautiful convention centers in the world!

The Old Miami Beach Convention Center

The Miami Beach Convention Center held a proud place in Miami history ever since it was built in 1957. So many incredible events were held there, from boxing heavyweight championships, to national political conventions. But several years ago, the city began to realize that the Convention Center was no longer serving the purpose it was built for. Newer, larger and more technologically advanced convention centers were crowding out the Miami Beach Convention Center. It hadn’t been renovated since 1989, when the size of the convention center was doubled, so this was going to require more than a fresh coat of paint. They were going to have to tear down and rebuild to make it into a world-class convention center again.

The NEW Miami Beach Convention Center

Over $615 million dollars have been invested into the new Miami Beach Convention Center, completely transforming the dated-looking building, both inside and out, into something more like a work of art. The old, 1980s facade has been torn down and replaced with a beautiful facade made from glass. The second you see it, you will know that this building is something special.

This wasn’t just an aesthetic “face and neck lift” – there was a tremendous amount of work done to expand the functionality of the facilities and to offer new options to guests. For example, there’s a 60,000-square-foot grand ballroom (we can’t wait to see it!), and other new facilities include a smaller 20,000-square-foot ballroom (still pretty impressive), brand-new meeting room facilities, state-of-the-art networking technology, public art spaces, green spaces, and more. If you are planning on renting a car while you are in Miami, no worries, they built a brand-new parking garage as well!

One of the most important things about the new convention center is the number of cutting-edge sustainability features being incorporated into the design to minimize the building’s impact on the environment. The building will have a Silver LEED certification, which is the law in Miami Beach. They are also taking steps to reduce the energy consumption of the convention center by 20%. Seeing as this renovation is adding huge new spaces like the grand ballroom, this is even more impressive! The building will harvest rain for the cooling towers, use high-efficiency LED lights, and is designed to be sun-shaded during the day.

Location, Location, Location

Another major reason you will love the Miami Beach Convention Center is its location. It’s only a 15-minute walk, or a 5-minute drive, from the 2018 ISAPS Congress host hotel, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. Located in the very heart of South Beach, you will have no trouble finding incredible dining, shopping and nightlife options just steps away from the door of the convention center.

Just for a point of reference, here is a Google Street View of the convention center prior to the extensive renovations or facelift of the facade. And here are some artist renderings of what it will look like when completed. Boy, it doesn’t even look like the same building! Pretty beautiful, right?

And here is some more good news! All of that construction will be gone by the time we get there, as the 2018 ISAPS Congress will be one of the first events to be officially held at the Convention Center after its renovation is complete.

We are incredibly excited for the 2018 Congress to arrive and, we suspect, the city of Miami is equally excited for their convention center to finally be completed. It’s kind of funny that both will be happening at the same time! You definitely don’t want to miss out on this year’s Congress, so you should book your spot as soon as possible. Prices are rising the closer we get to the event, so book now to save! And don’t forget to book your room at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, as rooms will be filling up fast. We can’t wait to see you and your fellow ISAPS Plastic Surgeons at what promises to be an ISAPS Congress to remember!
