The NEW Miami Beach Convention Center

Anyone who has attended an ISAPS Congress in the past knows just how big a deal they are. They are incredible events that bring in the largest concentration of plastic surgery talent in the world. For such an event, we need to have a state-of-the-art, giant facility that can properly host us the entire length of the conference. Good thing there is exactly such a place in South Beach, Miami, where the 2018 ISAPS Congress is being held! Located only a 5-minute drive or a 12-minute walk from the Lowes Miami Beach Hotel, our host hotel, it would be difficult for the convention center to be in a more convenient location for us. And it actually gets even better.

A few years ago, the city of Miami realized that the convention center just wasn’t meeting their needs anymore. They embarked on an ambitious timeline to completely renovate the aging facility and update it to meet the needs of the city in the 21st century. We are absolutely delighted the 2018 ISAPS Congress will be one of the first major events hosted in the brand-new Miami Beach Convention Center!

History

The Miami Beach Convention Center was first built in 1957 and quickly became an integral part of the city. Hosting national and international conferences over the course of its existence, there were many events held there that will go down in history.

If there are any boxing fans out there, the Miami Beach Convention Center is where Muhammad Ali beat Sonny Liston to win his first Heavyweight Championship of the world in 1964. Just four years later, the convention center hosted the Republican National Convention, to nominate its candidate for president that year. Then again, they hosted the Republican National Convention for a second time four years later, as well as the Democratic National Convention. This is a building that has gone down in United States history.

The last time the building underwent a renovation was in 1989, when it was fully upgraded and doubled in size. 30 years later, the city decided that it needed another renovation, and this one was going to be a doozy.

To get a good look at the Miami Beach Convention Center as it existed pre-renovation, just click here to be taken to Google Street View. It will be interesting to see exactly how different the building looks when we reach the Congress in October 2018.

What’s New in the Renovation?

This is the first major renovation in over 30 years, and they are pulling out all the stops to make the new Miami Beach Convention Center one of the most advanced, first-class convention centers in the world. When we say “renovation” — we aren’t talking about a new coat of paint. We are talking about a $615 million project that will completely gut, rebuild and transform the convention center.

The entire façade is being replaced with a stunning creation of glass. When completed, the building will cover 1.4 million square feet, big enough to host any number of events at the same time.

New features include a 60,000-square-foot grand ballroom, a 20,000-square-foot junior ballroom, new meeting rooms with even more flexible arrangements, indoor and outdoor spaces, art spaces, public parks, a new rooftop public parking garage and more.

Here are some artist renderings of what they expect the Miami Beach Convention Center to look like after the renovations are completed.

Sustainability

When you are creating a 1.4-million-square-foot convention center, you have to be aware of its potential impact on the environment. Miami Beach’s building code actually requires all public spaces to have a Silver LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). LEED-certified buildings are designed to generate less waste and be far more energy efficient than similar buildings would have been in the past. Some of the ways the Miami Beach Convention Center plans to reduce the building’s overall energy consumption by 20% include:

·      Sunshade the exterior of the building

·      Install reduced-flow water fixtures

·      Use high-efficiency LED lighting and occupancy light sensors

·      Utilize rain harvesting for the cooling towers

·      Save existing trees in the area while planting brand new ones
