How to Explore South Beach, Miami on a Budget

From what we’ve been hearing, plastic surgeons around the world are raving about the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s chosen host city for our 2018 Congress – South Beach, Florida.

South Beach is one of the most beautiful cities in North America, along with being one of the most enjoyable. Not only is it the home to some of the best beaches in Florida (which is saying something), it also has the most vibrant nightlife and some of the most incredible architecture you can imagine.

We know that many of the people coming to the Congress want to combine work and play, making their trip into an amazing working vacation. There is more to the ISAPS Congress than just aesthetic education! We’ve heard that many are bringing their families, and some are even bringing their medical staff. We know that money can be a huge factor on vacations like these, so we wanted to give you some advice about the fun and excitement you can have in South Beach on a budget.

The Beach

It’s right there in the name. South Beach has some of the most beautiful beaches in North America and access to them is 100% free. They are incredibly well-maintained and very popular. On the weekends, you can find a party atmosphere all along the beach, while in the mornings, you can find some quiet time to stroll.

The beach offers you the usual activities including swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing and sandcastles. If you are staying at our host hotel, the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, you will also find direct beach access, as well as organized activities such as paragliding, kayaking and even boat tours.

Green markets are all over South Beach, and there you can find absolutely delicious, fresh fruits and vegetables sold at very affordable prices.

Probably the biggest and best known market is the Lincoln Road Farmer’s Market. Here, the road is closed and pedestrians always have the right of way. Even if you don’t feel like splurging and buying some fresh coconuts, this market can be a great place to people-watch and absorb some of South Beach’s unique culture.

Self-Tours of South Beach

South Beach is probably best known as the city from the popular 80s TV show, Miami Vice. The brightly colored buildings and art deco stylings of the show really made an impression on viewers, and those buildings are still there today!

Although you can go on official walking tours of the city, you could also go online to download a self-guided walking tour like this one. You might not get all of the local color that a tour guide can provide, but you will still get to see all of the architectural hot spots!

Bike Tours

Another way to see the city is on a bicycle. Bike culture is huge in South Beach and you can rent a bicycle or two for just a few dollars and ride through the city, exploring some beautiful corners that you otherwise might miss on foot. Plus, just think of the exercise!

Free Art

Although South Beach is the home of some absolutely fantastic museums and art galleries, the reality is that the entire city is a work of art. If you want to absorb some of the city named the “New Art Capital of America” – just take a look around some of their neighborhoods.

On the first Friday of every month (which just happens to be November 2nd during the Congress), South Beach holds the Coral Gables Gallery Night. Here you can find free wine, live music and art installations, and it is all completely free!

You could also walk along Bird Road, an industrial location populated with up-and-coming artists. You might see some really incredible art being created right before your eyes!

We’ll be looking at some of the culinary hot spots of South Beach in another blog, but for those on a budget, you should know that you can find absolutely incredible food at affordable prices everywhere in the city.

Cuban food, especially, is very popular in South Beach, and there are many restaurants where you can get a great meal for under $10. Of course, if your suite at the hotel has an oven, you also have the option of buying some produce from the street markets mentioned above and making your own feast right in your hotel room. And believe us, food doesn’t get any fresher than that!

If you are traveling on a budget, there is no shortage of things that you can do in South Beach. Even if you only have your nights free (as you will be spending the days at the Congress), you will still find plenty of exciting activities to make this a work vacation to remember.

Have you already registered for the Congress? You don’t want to miss one of the premiere global aesthetic meetings in the world. You should also consider booking your hotel room right away, to make sure that you are right in the heart of the Congress, ready to learn from some of the greatest ISAPS plastic surgeons in the world.
